BIOGRAPHY

Born and raised in the heart of Indianapolis, Joyce Licorish (maiden name Joyce Mays),has been singing and writing songs since the tender age of 12. During the past few years, Joyce has broadened her horizons and appeared at countless local and national venues, including more quaint local venues such as Indy’s intimate ultra lounge The Savoy to larger national locals such as New York City’s world renowned Copacabana. She has had the honor of appearing as opening act for singing legends such as Chaka Khan, Babyface and The Isley Brothers, as well as up and coming super stars Joss Stone and the singing group 112 to name a few. In years past, her face could be seen in several of the Indianapolis Opera’s performances including their phenomenal performance of "Porgy and Bess" in 2000, the Denyce Graves Gala Benefit 2001, and "Aida" 2001, as well as "Don Pasquale", and "The Elixir of Love" all at Indianapolis's famous Clowes Memorial Hall theatre at Butler University.

Recently, in theatre, she played Sarah’s Friend in the Indianapolis Philharmonic production of"RAGTIME". Soon to be followed by her stint as one of seven divas in the American Cabaret’s sequel Production of "DIVAS!!" under the skillful direction of Bob Harbin, where she received multiple rave reviews and press write-ups. Her most recent role is as "Effie White" in the legendary musical "Dreamgirls" which will also feature Trenyce (American Idol) as "Deena".

Now Joyce can be found anywhere from here in her home town, Indianapolis, to New York City and even on the West Coast singing and modeling plus fashions.

Her vocal range is from 1st Soprano to 2nd Alto/Tenor and encompasses genres from R&B, to Blues, Jazz and even Opera with her forte being in the R&B/Neo Soul genre. With amazing vocal versatility, a vast performance history in too many venues to mention, insurmountable talent, with a strong urban, yet sultry sound, she is ready for the world. Singin’ The Blues – American Cabaret Theatre
Another successful run at the American Cabaret Theatre, Click Here for reviews of this show. From blues music came great artists, such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Bessie Smith, Etta James, Billie Holliday, Ma Rainey, Ethel Waters and others. But the blues might never have been created if it had not been for the influence and changes that occurred in the lives of African Americans. Final performance was Sunday February 25, 2007.

The show was a great succes and has already opened many doors for me. Thanks to everyone who made it out to see the show and even if you didn't you were with me in spirit. Dreamgirls was referred to by one journalist as the "Best Musical Indy has ever seen". Dreamcast and Dream Director Bob Harbin made this an enjoyable and memorable experience for the thousands who came out to see it. I was blessed and honored to be a part of such a groundbreaking theatrical production who's mission was to champion cultural diversity in the city of Indianapolis. Mission Accomplished!

DIVAS!! - American Cabaret Theatre
The Divas Are Divine in New ACT Revue
By Nick Crews
1/31/06
Indianapolis Star
www.IndyStar.com

"I once was lost, but now I'm found . . ." That's Joyce Licorish singing; her voice rising as though an altar call may be nigh at the American Cabaret Theatre. "Was blind, but now I see."
The moment comes mid-Act 1 of "DIVAS II," a new edition of a similarly titled show that ACT staged last fall.

True, Licorish's "Amazing Grace" displayed Mahalia Jackson-like depth, breadth and soul. But her performance, far from being a slavish imitation of the gospel great, announced that the real diva of the moment was Licorish herself. She wasn't alone. As the night unfolded, we were to enjoy six others whose abilities also claimed the title.

Licorish's performance also transformed the lyric into a statement of redemption for a theater that over the past year has seemed artistically adrift.

"Was lost," maybe. But now "found" -- at least if Sunday's performance is any indication.

What may be most important about this show is what it is not. It is not a remount of last year's "DIVAS!" Except for a handful of songs and three performers held over from last year, this show is substantially different. It's also substantially better.

Director Bob Harbin has dispensed with the bizarre slideshows and musical impersonations that have been ACT's stock-in-trade. Instead, he has assembled a cast of outstanding singers, handed them 30 or so memorable songs and invited them to make them their own. They do, delivering performances that succeed on their own merits.

The cast -- which, in addition to Licorish, includes Karen Brown, Vicky Richmond, Melissa Schott, Kelleen Strutz and Da'Ron Washington -- sings with agility, power, taste and versatility, offering up with equal ease everything from sultry ballads, to soul and R&B shouters, to show tunes.
Sunday's performance featured special guest diva Peggy Chambers. Chambers, the first of six guest artists who will perform through the run, put the smoke and smolder in a brace of torch songs including, "As If We Never Said Goodbye," "The Man That Got Away" and "If You Love Me (Really Love Me)."

A fresh and attractive set (by Bart Simpson, Rodney Tolliver, Gary DeMumbrum and Knoll Bendsen) artful lighting (by DeMumbrum) and solid arrangements (by musical director John Austin Butsch) adds luster to this shimmering showcase of standout vocalists.
