Another successful run at the American Cabaret Theatre, Click Here for reviews of this show.  From blues music came great artists, such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Bessie Smith, Etta James, Billie Holliday, Ma Rainey, Ethel Waters and others. But the blues might never have been created if it had not been for the influence and changes that occurred in the lives of African Americans.  Final performance was Sunday February 25, 2007.

I had the opportunity to open for Gerald Levert while he was touring in Indianapolis, he was a very down to earth, and loveable human being, he will be greatly missed.  This picture was taken a couple of years ago, New Years Eve in Atlanta, GA.    My thoughts and prayers go out to Gerald's friends, family and dedicated fans. GERALD LEVERT Died at age 40, he leaves countless fans and family members, and 4 children to cherish his memory.  Tomorrow is not promised, live each day like it is your last.

We will miss you Gerald!

Yet another successful show, Elton & Stevie recieved rave reviews from Indy Star and recieved fantastic coverage by the media.  This show celebrated the music and lives of Elton John and Stevie Wonder, Joyce along with 7 other phenominal performers as well as a fantastic 5-piece ensemble brought ACT alive and brought audiences to their feet and had some folks dancing in the aisles to Elton John and Stevie Wonder's Music.  Thanks to ACT for having Joyce Licorish on staff again as a performer and a big thanks to Bob Harbin (Director) for another amazing vision and well put-together show.  Visit www.IndyStar.com for reviews.

Dreamgirls A Major Success!

For info about the run  go to www.DreamgirlsIndianapolis.com  to view photos and read reviews.  You may also read reviews about the show via my presskit at www.sonicbids.com/JoyceLIcorish under the PRESS tab.

The show was a great succes and has already opened many doors for me.  Thanks to everyone who made it out to see the show and even if you didn't you were with me in spirit.  Dreamgirls was referred to by one journalist as the "Best Musical Indy has ever seen".  Dreamcast and Dream Director Bob Harbin made this an enjoyable and memorable experience for the thousands who came out to see it.  I was blessed and honored to be a part of such a groundbreaking theatrical production who's mission was to champion cultural diversity in the city of Indianapolis.  Mission Accomplished!

SEE DIVAS REVIEW BELOW!!

The Divas Are Divine in New ACT Revue

By Nick Crews

1/31/06

Indianapolis Star

www.IndyStar.com

"I once was lost, but now I'm found . . ." That's Joyce Licorish singing; her voice rising as though an altar call may be nigh at the American Cabaret Theatre. "Was blind, but now I see."

The moment comes mid-Act 1 of "DIVAS II," a new edition of a similarly titled show that ACT staged last fall.

True, Licorish's "Amazing Grace" displayed Mahalia Jackson-like depth, breadth and soul. But her performance, far from being a slavish imitation of the gospel great, announced that the real diva of the moment was Licorish herself. She wasn't alone. As the night unfolded, we were to enjoy six others whose abilities also claimed the title.

Licorish's performance also transformed the lyric into a statement of redemption for a theater that over the past year has seemed artistically adrift.

"Was lost," maybe. But now "found" -- at least if Sunday's performance is any indication.

What may be most important about this show is what it is not. It is not a remount of last year's "DIVAS!" Except for a handful of songs and three performers held over from last year, this show is substantially different. It's also substantially better.

Director Bob Harbin has dispensed with the bizarre slideshows and musical impersonations that have been ACT's stock-in-trade. Instead, he has assembled a cast of outstanding singers, handed them 30 or so memorable songs and invited them to make them their own. They do, delivering performances that succeed on their own merits.

The cast -- which, in addition to Licorish, includes Karen Brown, Vicky Richmond, Melissa Schott, Kelleen Strutz and Da'Ron Washington -- sings with agility, power, taste and versatility, offering up with equal ease everything from sultry ballads, to soul and R&B shouters, to show tunes.

Sunday's performance featured special guest diva Peggy Chambers. Chambers, the first of six guest artists who will perform through the run, put the smoke and smolder in a brace of torch songs including, "As If We Never Said Goodbye," "The Man That Got Away" and "If You Love Me (Really Love Me)."

A fresh and attractive set (by Bart Simpson, Rodney Tolliver, Gary DeMumbrum and Knoll Bendsen) artful lighting (by DeMumbrum) and solid arrangements (by musical director John Austin Butsch) adds luster to this shimmering showcase of standout vocalists.

IndustryGrind.com requests an interview with Joyce Licorish... Read More below:

What makes you different from everyone else?

My versatility I believe sets me apart from the rest.  I am capable of singing and fitting in to virtually every genre of music, from Classical to Country, from R&B to Rock, and I love all types of music.  I surprise people sometime by busting out with some Alanis Morrisette or Shania Twain in the middle of a set… I also sing Opera professionally so that adds a whole new dimension to my vocal capabilities…

What has been the most difficult challenge?

Balancing home life, work and my music has been the most difficult challenge.  I love my music so much it is easy for me to neglect other things for the sake of it.  I have had to learn to balance things so that I don’t’ loose sight of the most important things in my life, GOD and my family.

What's your goal with this project? What do you want people to get from your music?

I want to cross all boundaries with my music, countries, continents and races.  Music it is like air to me... inhaling it is my sustenance and while breathing it in my troubles simply evaporate...  With that said, I want to melt away the troubles of the world if only for a moment through my music.  I want to open the world’s eyes to the inner and outer beauty of a full figured woman and show them that skinny-minded-society has infiltrated the music industry and that the MUSIC is what should matter not whether or not you can fit in a size 6 pair of jeans…
